Better Than HTPC? The Asus Eee Keyboard
by Simon Hill

asus-eee-keyboard-pcAsus is bringing out an exciting new keyboard which is essentially a PC device complete with a 5 inch touch screen. They have now committed to an October release for the Eee keyboard which was first shown off at CES back in January. It may have taken a while to get here but this device looks well worth the wait.

So what is it? Basically it is a PC in a keyboard. It’s not much bigger than a normal keyboard and it weighs less than 2 pounds but it is packing the same specs as a netbook. There is a 1.6 GHz Atom processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 16 GB or 32 GB hard drive and the ability to connect to any display. It has support for Wi-Fi on the 802.11n standard, Bluetooth and wireless Ultra Wideband HDMI. It would be perfect for hooking up to your HDTV and accessing your home network.

The Eee keyboard has a 5 inch colour touch screen where you would normally find the keypad. You can use it browse the web or select content from your home network to play on your TV. It looks like a pretty stylish design, machined from a single piece of metal with black keys and it is impressively slim. Considering the specs packed inside this is an impressive achievement.

Home Theater PCs are becoming increasingly popular but the ASUS Eee Keyboard looks like a great alternative to me. Instead of an extra box next to your TV with a remote control you have a full QWERTY keyboard so you can access the web, search, work and send messages. It is completely wireless so there is no extra mess and it can connect to your home computer network to access files and the web as well as connecting to your HDTV to broadcast high definition footage. The price is yet to be revealed but rumours suggest around the $400 – $500 mark.
