Car Tracking GPS Guide

Remember the good old days when obnoxious car alarms flooded the streets (especially at 2am)?  Well, those days are soon to be behind us.  Car tracking GPS services will now allow owners to keep track of and protect their cars, without the need for ear-piercing noise makers.

In addition to security, Car tracking GPS services provide a host of additional benefits.  For example, these devices are often used with high-end vehicle locator systems, such as On Star, Accutracking or Road Trac.  Customer service representatives can track vehicles of their customers, offering everything from directions, to assistance in unlocking doors if one loses ones keys.  In fact, they can determine when an airbag has been deployed in a vehicle and send help within seconds.   They can also remotely identify many mechanical problems and send out a tow truck before you even know you need one!  Finally, did you know they can even remotely disable the starter?   That ought to foil a few would be car thieves.

If you consider a car tracking GPS system, you’ll want to ask yourself a few questions.  First of all, think about what types of services you might need.  Obviously, a system that can monitor your every movement and unlock your doors remotely will cost a bit more than a system that simply pinpoints the location of your vehicle on a map.  For many users, though, it will make sense to have a more high-end option, especially if you’re looking for a technological partner in the battle to get your kids (or your spouse!) to drive more slowly.

Consider, too, how your car tracking GPS system will interface with any GPS receiver you might already have in your car, such as the Garmin Nuvi or the Magellan RoadMate.  Bear in mind that these are GPS receivers, not transmitters.  Although some higher end devices may be able to provide transmission services or, at a minimum Bluetooth compatibility through which you can connect your cell phone, they are not designed for tracking purposes.

You’ll also want to look at the installation procedures for your selected device.  If you are using a simple tracking device with limited or no outside monitoring you can often install this on your own.  If you go with a high-end system, be sure to work through a reputable dealer.  Installing car tracking GPS system is a bit more complicated than putting on new wiper blades and should not be attempted by anyone without adequate knowledge of the technology.

Finally, of course, you want to be comfortable with the personnel who will be monitoring you and your car.  For safety’s sake, you’ll obviously want to be sure the monitoring services operate 24 hours a day.  Check, too, into the redundancies built into the system – what if the network they’re using goes down?  Do they have a back-up?

Ultimately, bear in mind that your car tracking GPS provider will learn a lot about you – where you go, your driving habits – even your car maintenance practices.  You’ll want to be sure that information is safe and secure (except, of course, when you want to track down your kids!
