A friend of mine first bought an HDTV several years back and at the time it was considered a state-of-the-art unit. Technology changes so quickly that he was already looking to update his HDTV which was only a few years old. One of his concerns was the amount of time and programming it took to set up his HDTV so he was looking for a unit that delivers the latest innovations in HDTV technology without the headaches and fuss of setting up and programming the unit.

After speaking with my friend I began to focus on HDTVs which would meet my friend’s criteria and being interested in reviewing electronics products, I wanted to see if I could challenge myself to find a unit that delivered everything including easy setup. As I spent time on research, I came across the Vizio vf552xvt which appeared to be close to my friend’s expectations so I decided to investigate further and give it a test run. As long as I was investigating I decided to take notes so I could provide a vf552xvt unbiased review to help my friend and others make an informed decision.

Vizio vf552xvt Fast Setup

When I went to the electronics store the attendant demonstrated how fast and easy the Vizio vf552xvt is to setup right out of the box. He took the unit out of the box and was up and running within 15 minutes. I was quite impressed considering all of the features that are packed into the TruLED HDTV. The Vizio vf552xvt also connected to a Blu-ray player with great ease by simply plugging in the HDMI cable and following the simple startup wizard. Wireless connections are also fairly easy to configure and the unit comes with a rather substantial remote control device.

The remote control tends to be a little thick however this is due to the impressive Vizio vf552xvt qwerty keyboard which is equipped with a slide out interface. The keyboard is quite comfortable to use when you enter text and works very similar to a smartphone which is really cool. The remote control is also equipped with Bluetooth which enables you to operate the controls within a significant distance of the TV. The Bluetooth capability also suggests that there will be new capabilities in the future such as using other Bluetooth devices to operate the TV controls.

Vizio vf552xvt LCD HDTV Picture Quality

Vizio seemed to go all the way with picture quality technology which creates a distinctive viewing experience thanks to the Vizio vf552xvt LED backlight made with 960 LEDs which are distributed to 80 control blocks with Smart Dimming so you can control the blocks according to what type of content you are viewing. I was also impressed when viewing programs that contained dark scenes with the Smart Dimming feature. This feature provides a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio which makes viewing darker scenes a lot easier. This technology is also enhanced by the Vizio vf552xvt 1080p high definition resolution which provides sharp imaging even in the darkest of scenes.

Vizio vf552xvt SRS Trusurround

The sound quality on the Vizio vf552xvt is quite acceptable thanks to Trusurround that does a pretty good job of filling the room with surround sound. You can also opt to connect your own home entertainment sound system to improve the quality even further. The sound is delivered through a sound bar that is positioned at the bottom of the unit making it appear a little bulky. If you do not mind that the audio is very decent quality on this unit.

Internet Apps

The interactive apps platform on the Vizio vf552xvt is quite impressive and comes with Amazon Video on Demand, Flickr, Netflix, Rhapsody, Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo Widgets with more being added in the future according to Vizio. The Apps Dock appears on the screen with a simple touch of a button on the remote and the widgets are quite speedy when compared to Yahoo widgets. You also have easy access to other features such as blip.tv, CBS, NBC, and the Weather Channel. You can also use the iMemories feature which will convert all of your home movies and photos to digital format so you can enjoy them on TV.

The Vizio vf552xvt is also equipped with WiFi and an Ethernet connection. There are four HDMI jacks on the 55 inch unit as well as a VGA output for connecting your PC, component video input, and three USB ports which are located on the side of the unit.

The apps are fantastic and the features you get on the Vizio vf552xvt are quite abundant for the price point of this unit. You can always pay significantly more to go beyond the features of this unit however, it appears to be a very good deal for this level of consumer electronics. I am glad I investigated this TV because it is a step above most of the other HDTVs and second to very few units which may offer more features. What’s more is I was able to find a great price on this HDTV here.

My cousin recently contacted me because he knows that I am into reviewing and learning about the latest electronic technology on the market. He just moved into an apartment and will be starting college soon and he asked me if I knew of a quality HDTV that was reasonably priced and would fit well in the limited space of his apartment. He told me he went looking for an HDTV and got overwhelmed as most consumers do when they look at the HDTVs on the market.

On another recent excursion to the electronics store I remembered coming across the Vizio vl320m so I decided to go back and take a closer look. As I was reviewing this Vizio model of HDTVs I jotted down some notes because I noticed when I did some research that it was difficult to locate a Vizio vl320m unbiased review. I wanted to provide as much information as possible to help my cousin make an educated decision and here is what I found:

Vizio vl320m 32 Inch LCD HDTV Picture Quality

For an HDTV of this size the picture quality features are pretty amazing and lived up to my expectations when I gave the picture quality a test run. This was due to the Vizio vl320m contrast ratio which is a surprising 50,000:1 which provides extremely sharp contrasts with deep blacks against brighter contrasting colors that created an incredible viewing experience. The picture quality is also topped off with Smooth Motion II technology with a 60Hz refresh rate and the Vizio vl320m full HD 1080p high resolution which provides sharp imaging and refined picture quality.

In addition to great picture quality you can also take advantage of the picture-in-picture feature which allows you to utilize two sources of input to display two videos at one time with split screen capability. You can also resize the screen to suit your tastes and program the feature to display the pictures side by side.

Vizio vl320m Audio Quality

When I investigated the audio quality of the Vizio vl320m flat panel HDTV is was very good thanks to the innovative technology created by SRS Labs. The technology which is integrated into the Vizio vl320m SRS Trusurround created a sound quality which was more than I expected and was quite realistic to that of a separate sound system. When I stepped back from the unit the audio was very crisp and clear with the surround sound feature quite true to life.

The audio is also equipped with five presets for listening to pop, rock, jazz, flat, or classic and there is a feature which allows you to regulate the audio and video synchronization to prevent hesitation between the audio and video. Another cool audio feature I found is the SRS TruVolume which is capable of regulating the volume so you do not get scared out of your wits with commercials that purposely increase the volume because they know you walk out of the room.

Vizio vl320m Connectivity

The connection capability of the Vizio vl320m was also more than I expected from a 32 inch unit with three HDMI ports to connect a wide variety of peripheral devices such as digital cables, gaming units, cameras and much more. What also surprised me was that Vizio provides a one year warranty which provides a guarantee for zero bright pixel defects. The connectivity also provides for Blu-ray and HD-DVD players for the future.

Energy Consumption

Vizio shows concern for going green with HDTV by packing in the features that help to conserve energy. The Vizio vl320m comes equipped with a power saver which is designed to help you conserve energy and reduce the costs of your energy bill. I also found a nifty feature which allows you to regulate the backlight intensity which can reduce the brightness of the picture quality but it also helps to conserve energy. You can also compensate for this by adjusting the room lighting which can actually enhance your viewing experience. The Vizio vl320m has also earned the Energy Star seal of approval for reduction of energy consumption.

Vizio vl320m Manual

I loved the Vizio vl320 manual which provides comprehensive descriptions and all of the information you need to know. There is full color quick start poster which clearly describes what all of the inputs are for along with suggestions for choosing the best connections to each port. The manual is well laid out and easy to understand and is jam packed with clear illustrations which support the descriptions.

Our Take

Usually HDTVs with 1080p are higher in cost when compared with lower resolution HDTV models which are similar. I found the Vizio vl320m to be quite reasonable in price for all the amazing features it offers as well as a picture that delivers more detail. It is also a great unit if you are looking for to enjoy the latest innovations in technology and you have limited space in your living quarters. 1080p HDTVs can still be quite costly however as technology marches on they will most likely be lower priced. For this reason, I was surprised to find a great low price on a Vizio vl320m here.

A friend of mine was looking for an HDTV he could get as a gift for his brother who was still using a television from days gone by. His television was quite antiquated and on my visit I discussed all the great features the new HDTVs offer and the benefits of upgrading. Kind of set in his ways, he was hesitant and thought the technology was probably over his head. I thought otherwise and being the technology buff that I am, I set out on an excursion with my friend to look for a TV upgrade that we thought my friend’s brother would end up enjoying.

My friend’s brother has limited space in his living area so we took that into consideration when we started reviewing HDTVs. We went through several units until we discovered the Vizio sv370xvt 37 inch 120Hz LCD HDTV which looked like the perfect size and displayed a great picture. We decided to investigate further and we came up with this Vizio sv370xvt review:

Vizio sv370xvt Slim Design

The Vizio sv370xvt has a very sleek and stylish slim design of only 2.2 inches in width with a high tech housing that will suit any décor. At 37 inches and the slim design we thought this HDTV would fit well in my friend’s brother’s living space however we continued to investigate the TV a little further to find out more about the features.

Vizio sv370xvt Picture Quality

When we gave the picture a test viewing we were treated to a brightly lit high end picture quality with Vizio sv370xvt 1080p high definition resolution which provided exceptional imaging. This model unit is also equipped with enhanced video, great multimedia features and an Advanced Glare Polarizer which is capable of adjusting the contrast ratio for rooms that have bright lighting without creating a haze over the screen like older LCD model TVs.

The Vizio sv370xvt is also equipped with Enhanced In-Plane Switching which provides enhanced picture quality at wider viewing angles as well as superior image quality. To top off the exceptional picture quality the 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio allows you to enjoy fast action programs minus the blur. We also noticed that viewing is still optimal from as much as 8 feet away from the TV and you can enjoy the picture-in-picture feature which allows you to view from more than one input. We figured when we showed this awesome picture quality to my friend’s brother it would be love at first sight.

Vizio sv370xvt Audio Enhancements

When we played around with the audio on the Vizio sv370xvt, we were quite impressed with the audio enhancements which are included in this TV. The audio technology by SRS Labs is quite innovative and extreme and delivers top performance audio from the speakers which are built into the unit. The audio system is empowered by Vizio sv370xvt SRS Trusurround HD which provided us with a true to life surround sound experience which was very close to a separate high end audio speaker system.

What I especially liked about the audio system was the implementation of Intelligent Multi-Band Monitoring which prevents the annoying changes in volume especially when commercial advertisers intentionally increase the volume which returns to normal when your program resumes.

Vizio sv370xvt Connectivity

The great thing about this HDTV is the excellent HDMI connectivity with three HDMI ports which provide extreme connectivity with a wide variety of peripheral devices. The HDMI inputs support almost every type of device including your DVD player, digital cable, Blu-ray player, gaming units, and many other types of external devices. For the die hard gamers, there is also a nifty Game Port so you can enjoy fast action games.

You can access your media via the USB ports which are provided on the side of the TV. You can also use the USB ports to update software for the Vizio sv370xvt which is also known as firmware and access your music and photo files which are stored on your flash drive. There is also an S-Video port, component video, composite video, and one PC port.

Overall, we found the Vizio sv370xvt to be a great value for the price point. The picture quality is exceptional regardless of the content you are viewing. When we tried the unit as a computer monitor the quality was excellent as well. The remote control is easy to use with a sleek design and is easy to use in the dark with lighted channel buttons and volume controls. When we lifted the TV it was very lightweight and the store attendant explained the easy setup right out of the box. The setup menu

s are easy to read and follow and adjustment is easy to see since the menu does not occupy the entire screen.

When the Vizio sv370xvt was released in the latter part of 2009 it was rather pricey but as we investigated further we landed a great price here.

When I did a little research online I was surprised that I could not find a Vizio vo32e unbiased review so I was glad that I took it upon myself to review the unit myself which ended up having great overall features.

When you are in the market for a television it can be just as confusing as trying to buy any other type of electronic gadget with all of the brands and models which are currently available on the market. Not too long ago I was on my usual excursion to the electronics store to find out what was new on the market and as I was looking around and test driving a few things I happened to notice a line of HDTVs to which I was not very familiar with so I walked over to investigate.

I noticed an HDTV that would make a nice gift for my mother who still has an old conventional TV which I have been begging with her to upgrade. Every time I visit her I cannot believe she has not upgraded so I gave the Vizio vo320e 32-Inch LCD HDTV a second look because it looked like it was about the size she could use and would fit in with the décor of her living area. As I investigated the features I found it to be a great all-around HDTV at an affordable price.

Overall Great Features

I was not familiar with the Vizio brand however I was impressed by the amount of features that you get for such an affordable price. When I did a little research online I was surprised that I could not find a Vizio vo32e unbiased review so I was glad that I took it upon myself to review the unit myself which ended up having great overall features.

At first view the Vizio vo320e had an impressive picture with 1080p high definition and a notable Vizio vo320e 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio that produced vivid colors and sharp contrasting. The screen also has a cover that is impact resistant so when the grandchildren are visiting this is a real plus.

The cabinet holding the impressive picture was also very sleek and stylish and would fit perfectly in my mother’s living area. I also noticed that it was manufactured with upgraded quality and workmanship from the 26-inch version. The cable hookups are also built horizontally instead of vertically which make it more compatible when you use the TV stand.

I knew my mother would also appreciate the fact that the Vizio vo320e is loaded with energy saving features which exceed the Energy Star 3.0 power rating by 15 percent which makes this HDTV very efficient when it comes to saving on your energy bill. It is also extremely lightweight at just over 24 pounds including the non-swivel TV stand.

A Closer Look

The Vizio vo320e prices are unmatched when you really take the time to have a closer look at some of the interesting features which are included on the Vizio320e. The unit is equipped with six HD ready input ports which includes two HDMI ports to allow you to connect a Blu-Ray/DVD receiver to the television, gaming consoles, and other high definition equipment.

The Vizio vo320e ATSC Clear QAM tuner is a really nifty feature because it allows you to enjoy high definition and conventional television programs without paid high definition service. This features also works with a high definition cable service if you already happen to have it.

The Vizio vo320e HDTV is 720P however you can upscale it to Vizio vo320e 1080i which is the default resolution of all over the air high definition broadcasts. The advantage of this is also the 1080 can be used for Play Station 3 and Blu-ray in addition to a variety of video on demand services.

There are also a few other nifty picture features which include the Advanced Adaptive Luma which will automatically change the picture according to the content being displayed, a backlight setting that you can change to automatically adjust to picture content or room lighting, a color balance feature with five settings, and a noise reduction feature that helps to clarify lower quality sources.

The screen is also very consistent and uniform when it comes to color and brightness across the screen and off-angle performance. When I tested it, the color accuracy was unmatched by the accurate grayscale and above average color saturation. Primary and secondary colors are very close to standard which lends a realistic quality to a nature scene.

Vizio vo320e Manual

The 67-page instruction manual that accompanies the Vizio vo320e is very clearly written and easy to follow. It also contains a nifty quick setup guide that you can use as a quick reference to setup the TV in no time flat. Since the Vizio vo320e has a wide variety of ways to connect your video sources, the manual is a huge plus in understanding all of these sources which include the HDMI ports, Component Video, Svideo, SVGA, and coaxial connections.

So if you are in the market for a great looking HDTV that will suit your apartment, living room, or bedroom, while enjoying all of the latest innovations in high definition viewing, you cannot go wrong with the Vizio vo320e especially with the affordable price. The size of the unit, picture quality, and features make this a good buy and you can find a very competitive price on a Vizio vo320e by clicking here.

Here are some of the interesting benefits that I found when I tested the Samsung PN50B650 flat screen plasma television.

Being in the market for a television can be a confusing adventure but recently I decided to brave the flat screen television market in search of an LCD television that would deliver superb performance while fitting the requirements of my wallet. I found a variety of different models by several different manufacturers before I came across the Samsung PN50B650 which fulfilled some of the requirements I was looking for while delivering superior performance with razor sharp images. Here are some of the interesting benefits that I found when I tested the Samsung PN50B650 flat screen plasma television.

Wonderful Sleek Look

The appearance of the Samsung PN50B650 with its sleek design first caught my eye with its glossy black panel and slight touch of red embedded in the bezel which gives it a modern high tech look while enhancing the overall appearance of the unit. The panel is movable on a high polished clear glass swivel with sleek looking stand that is the perfect enhancement for the glossy black panel with tinge of red. The eye-catching appearance of the Samsung PN50B650 made me want to know more about what was under the hood so I investigated a little further.

Outstanding High Definition Picture Quality

The Samsung PN50B650 Full HD 1080p Plasma HDTV scores high in my book when it comes to picture contrast and black colors. The brightly lit screen gives off color tones that are pleasing to the eye while providing sharp imaging and unmatched picture quality which is not compromised when you view the screen from a different angle. After spending countless hours viewing a lot of different LCD and plasma screens I found the PN50B650 outperformed all of the other televisions I researched.

What impressed me the most about the picture quality of this unit was the Samsung PN50B650 Dynamic Contrast Ratio feature which provided a true theatre experience with rich dynamic colors that provide beautiful and unmistakable clarity.

Awesome Internet Connectivity

I was completely blown away when I connected the Samsung PN50B650 to my home network via the Ethernet port located on the side of the unit. Not only could I enjoy YouTube videos in a higher resolution but the wide variety of other capabilities was quite impressive. Almost everything you do on the Internet you can enjoy on an impressive 50” screen including being able to follow the news, sports, and weather via Yahoo widgets, follow Twitter feeds, and receive movies in minutes from services such as Netflix and Blockbuster.

The Internet connection on the Samsung PN50B560 is also capable of accessing any computer that is configured to your home network and provides a Windows server program to assist with connectivity to multiple PCs. Once you are connected to your home network, it is simply a matter of clicking the Media button on your remote control to access all of the media that is stored on your home PCs. The only drawback is you cannot listen to music while viewing your photos however this can easily be corrected by connecting to the USB port.

The Samsung PN50B560 is also DLNA certified which allows the unit to perform more tasks. When a device is DLNA certified it will have a logo that indicates certification and it means that a television is capable of working as a digital media player or a digital media renderer. As a digital media player the unit can browse and play digital content on other DLNA certified devices such as a digital media server. When the television acts as a digital media renderer it can be controlled by a digital media controller to operate the digital content that is sent from the digital media server.

Great On-Screen Menu

The onscreen menu on the Samsung PN50B650 is like no other that I have seen. It is very clear and easy to understand and provides explanations of each function on the bottom of the screen. Despite the fact that every function is explained on the menu it can get quite involved. If you need to simplify it and break it down into functions you frequently use, there is a button on the remote that allows you to perform this task. It also allows you to quickly change inputs from DVD to Blu-ray while viewing an explanation of each function.

The audio is equipped with TruSurround which is not quite the same as real surround sound but the quality is quite good for speakers that are mounted on the front of the unit. If you are not real fussy about this I think you will find the Samsung PN50B650 has a lot of great features and versatility at an affordable price. After doing a great deal of research I was able to find a great deal on this versatile HDTV on this website.

At the onset it appeared that the unit sported an impeccable picture quality with easy to use controls so I decided to delve a little deeper and read some of the Samsung LN46B750 reviews.

My friend was in the market for a new HDTV and was completely frustrated because she could not find one that was that was straightforward and easy to use. Not being the techie type she wanted the awesome viewing experience that an HDTV provides without the hassles of configuration and use.

I set out to help her by doing some homework on my own and that is when I discovered the Samsung LN46B750. At the onset it appeared that the unit sported an impeccable picture quality with easy to use controls so I decided to delve a little deeper and read some of the Samsung LN46B750 reviews. After doing a little research I got a hold of one of these units so I could see for myself and here is what I found:

Awesome Samsung LN46B750 1080p Resolution

The picture quality with 1080p resolution is a step forward from the previous Samsung A series. The new B750 offers 240Hz motion compensation technology which is twice the 120HZ capability of the Auto Motion Plus in the B650 series. This means that the picture is able to capture motion with much less blurring that normally occurs in televisions that do not have this type of technology.

I especially liked the Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that delivers twice the capability because it quickly adjusts to fast-paced action sequences in movies and accurately captures the action of sports activity. When I showed it to my friend it exceeded her expectations for the type of viewing experience she had imagined.

What’s more is the Wide Color Enhancer technology optimizes the color tones above and beyond your expectations and the Ultra Clear Panel and 150,000:1 contrast ration far exceed the specs of the B650. The quality was maintained when I tested Blu-ray and DVDs. What was perfect for my friend is that you could achieve optimum picture quality with just a few adjustments shortly after removing the Samsung LN46B750 HDTV from the box.

An HDTV That Accommodates Multiple Devices

Although my friend is not the techie type she was amazed at the ease of being able to connect your PC and other multimedia devices. Thanks to the Ethernet connection and the new DLNA technology, you can easily access multimedia from any PC that is connected to your home network and remote digital content through Windows server technology. My friend also liked the fact that she could easily access her social networking accounts to keep in touch with her friends while enjoying all of the benefits the Samsung LN46B750 HDTV has to offer.

Samsung LN46b750 SRS TruSurround

When I read that the Samsung LN46B750 is designed with SRS TruSurround HD sound technology I had to investigate this a little further. I was thinking, “Was it really a true surround sound experience?” Well, pretty close with an effect of digital surround stereo sound from its speaker system which includes two 10W speakers complete with great bass sound and on board woofer. I would say the sound is quite decent however if you are seriously finicky about a true surround sound experience then you may want to attach an additional system to thoroughly enjoy this amazing unit.

Sleek High-Tech Look

If you are worried about the Samsung LN46B750 being a distraction from your décor you can rule out this possibility. The B750 has a modern sleek look with an elegant shade of black which is enhanced by a touch of grey color. This is slightly different than the B650 which is manufactured with a hint of red color on the bezel.

If you are looking for a high end HDTV that is easy to use then it is worth your while to give the Samsung LN46B750 a test run. Although it retails in the ballpark of $2,200 I found a great deal for almost $800 less here.

After reading some of the Samsung LN46B650 reviews I decided to give it a test run for myself to find out more about the capabilities of this unit.

I was recently researching Samsung televisions because I was looking for a top quality all-around high definition television that I could use to replace my old television without breaking the bank. If you have ever been in the market for a television then you know how daunting the search can be and how hard it is to find a television that has everything you use without paying for all of the extras that you don’t use.

After reading some of the Samsung LN46B650 reviews I decided to give it a test run for myself to find out more about the capabilities of this unit. I discovered some great features that made this television the all-around unit that I was looking for so, I want to share with other readers what I found so great about the Samsung LN46B650 LCD HDTV.

Great All-Around Features

The reason I found this unit to be a great all-around television is because of its state-of-the-art sharp on-screen images and its capability to connect to your home network so you can conduct your usual Internet activities when you do not want to watch television. Although the Samsung LN46B650 is a little higher in price than smaller screen HDTVs, all of the extras and the great picture quality make it all worthwhile.

What seals the deal is the Auto Motion Plus 120Hz feature which catches picture motion by doubling the frame rate from 60 to 120 frames per second on the 120Hz LCD panel. This type of technology creates a seamless transition from one frame to the next resulting in a very pleasurable viewing experience. This technology coupled with the 100,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio will provide you with an unparalleled viewing experience with deep blacks and bright whites that create sharply contrasted imaging.

Impressive Full High Definition 1080P

In addition to Auto Motion Plus and Dynamic Contrast Ratio features the Samsung LN46B650 panel contains almost 2 times more scanning lines and twice the resolution when compared to other standard HDTVs. More scanning lines create more pixels, fine details, and an overall improved picture quality.

The panel is also equipped with a really nifty 2/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp as a backlight which provides over 90 percent coverage of the National Television Systems Committee standard where other LCD televisions only cover about 70 percent. The result is very sharp color contrast that is unmatched when compared to other similar televisions to this model. If this isn’t enough, you can also enjoy the added PIP (Picture in Picture) feature which allows you to enjoy vivid color while dividing the picture into two TV programs you can watch simultaneously.

Very Cool Media 2.0

One of the foremost highlights in the Samsung LN46B650 specs is the awesome capability to capture Internet activities on the 46” screen thanks to the Media 2.0 technology. This cool new technology patented by Samsung allows you to receive content from Yahoo, Flickr, and other Internet locations right on the television screen. What’s more, the Media 2.0 programs allows you to access a content library that is chocked full of pre-loaded content.

I was overly impressed with the fact that Media 2.0 is DLNA certified which allows you to access the PCs that are connected to your home network to view movies and photos which are stored on your personal PC. All you need is Internet connectivity with an Ethernet connection or a wireless Local Area Network (LAN) in your home. You can also connect the television to a flash drive or digital camera to access content via the USB port included on the unit.

Cutting Edge LCD Panel

The LCD panel on the Samsung LN46B650 has a distinctive high tech design with a touch of translucent red color around the bezel which adds an accent to the sleek black polished motif. The bezel with a touch of color is fashion forward with great reviews from other people who have purchased this unit. I personally like the unique look and the fact that the unit is Energy Star compliant.

The verdict is that this is a great television with all-around performance that offers many features that you will keep discovering long after you have set this beauty up in your living area. Although the average retail price ranges around $2000 I found a great deal on a unit that was several hundred dollars cheaper here.

If you’ve not yet come across Apple TV you haven’t been missing much. It is basically a wee box which allows you to rent high definition movies, buy high definition TV shows and listen to your iTunes music through your TV. You can also access your photos, podcasts and YouTube movies on the box. It plugs into your TV via HDMI and can connect to your home network wirelessly. In effect it is an HTPC (Home Theater PC) but at a much greater price than comparable devices. Well that has all changed with the recent Apple announcement that the 40 GB model has been dumped and the 160 GB model has dropped $100 off the price tag.

You can now get a 160 GB Apple TV set-top box for $229. It is a cute white box with an iPod style remote control and it is very easy to set up and use. This recent price slash has sparked rumours that Apple is planning something big for the product and to be honest they’ll have to because other than the visual style there is very little to recommend this over other similar devices even with the price drop.

Apparently the new iTunes LP/Extras format supports the resolution output by the Apple TV. There are also suggestions that gaming may make some appearance on the device, although it is pure speculation at the moment.

The Apple TV box has reasonable specs and rental prices for movies are $4.99 for a new release in high definition and $3.99 for a library title. However the device only supports a very limited range of video and audio formats which drastically limits what you can play via your home network. For big Apple fans this will no doubt appeal but it will take more than the latest price cut to convince me of Apple TVs charms.

Another interesting product on show at IFA this week is the touch screen remote...

Another interesting product on show at IFA this week is the touch screen remote control from Samsung which doubles up as a 7 inch TV. It allows you to browse through other channels and actually watch them on the remote without changing the channel currently on your TV. It needs a TV with a dual tuner and a fast 802.11n Wi-Fi link to connect the two devices.

The remote gives you access to a detailed TV guide with information about whatever else is on. It is a touch screen so operation is simple and taking the idea further you can even check out the channel without changing the main TV. If you find something you actually want to watch on the main TV you can hold down on the channel and sweep it upwards and it’ll come on the big screen.

The touch screen remote is very easy to use and there are already universal remotes from companies like Philips and Logitech amongst others which are based on a similar idea but they lack the dual TV tuner. The top of the line Philips Pronto remote is pictured. Samsung are also planning to have a third option which is internet access on the device. With more and more TVs supporting Ethernet or Wi-Fi connections and access to a basic range of applications this functionality could be a clever advance.

While this remote may save a few arguments about what to watch on the family TV it is likely to make competition for the remote itself even fiercer. At the moment it is just a concept so there is no indication when it might reach the market or how much it would cost.

3D TV and Gaming

The IFA show is the world’s largest consumer electronics trade fair. It is also a chance for the big electronics companies to show off their latest wares. This year the Berlin show has seen various announcements and gadgets but one of the hottest topics has been the rise of 3D. Consumers may still be waiting for a product range and the level of interest is still a matter of some debate but a number of big electronics companies are working on 3D televisions and 3D gaming technology. They predict 3D will be the next big thing.

Sony had a PlayStation 3 set up at the show with a 3D TV and a set of glasses which allow the user to experience Wipeout in 3D. The high definition footage came from a normal PS3 and it was the prototype Bravia 3D TV and the glasses that were creating the 3D effect. This means it should work with all the existing games and people who crave that 3D experience will only have to shell out for the TV and glasses, although they aren’t likely to be cheap.

Panasonic, Philips, JVC, nVidia and Toshiba were all showing off 3D capable products. The technology seems close to hitting the mass market and we could see it on TVs, computer monitors and even laptops within the next few years. There are of course a few problems still to work out, not least of which is the lack of agreement on a standard format. There are at least three kinds of different glasses needed to work with the different 3D technologies and another format war like the HD battle which Blu-ray won seems likely.

The success of some recent 3D movies seems to have encouraged the electronics companies but the effect is still very limited and the fact it requires the viewer to use glasses is still a big turn off. Many people complain of nausea and headaches after wearing the glasses for prolonged periods and it is far from a certainty that the mass market wants this technology right now.

It is also worth pointing out that a 3D effect is possible now using glasses and current HD TVs which have a high enough refresh rate. People aren’t going to be keen to shell out for new electronics if they still have to wear glasses and I think that’s probably the killer. The added immersion it could bring to gaming however is obvious and I think gamers would be much more likely to adopt the technology even with glasses. For normal TV and even home movie viewing I can’t see this being popular.
