Go ahead, admit it. You get lost every once in a while and, like many of us, you do NOT want to stop and ask for directions. Fortunately, there are solutions – and inexpensive ones at that – in the form of discount Garmin GPS devices.
If you’re not familiar with GPS systems, have no fear. GPS stands for Global Positioning System and it’s a satellite-based technology that people use to figure out not only where they are, but where they want to go (physically, not metaphorically). Once reserved for the military marketplace, GPS systems have made their way into the consumer world in recent years. Fortunately for those of us without Pentagon sized budgets, prices for these sophisticated systems have recently plummeted, especially from leading manufacturers such as Garmin.
What should you look for in a discount Garmin GPS product? Here are five key tips to keep in mind as you start browsing:
First, be sure that you have a good idea of how you want to use the system. Are you looking for something you’ll keep in your car? Or do you need a portable device for hiking, shopping and other truly mobile activities? What about motorcycle-friendly devices like the Garmin Zumo? Will you need something that will help you navigate on water like the Garmin StreetPilot, which allows you to navigate using the latest marine cartography information (hopefully for use on your boat – not too many cars can or should be navigating in water!)
Second, do you need to connect your discount Garmin GPS system to other devices? The recently released Garmin nuvi 680, for example, comes with Bluetooth technology which, when connected to your Bluetooth enabled cell phone, will allow you to make hands-free calls through the systems built in microphone.
Third, consider whether your device needs to do more than just give you directions. Many systems include MP3 players, JPEG viewers, currency converters and more. Do you want to consolidate the entertainment systems you already have into one handy device or purchase a more limited system that provides navigation services only? How will your new system integrate with your existing devices such as in-car CD systems?
Fourth, one of the most important things to consider in deciding on a discount Garmin GPS device is ease of use. Depending on the situations in which you’ll be using the system, you need to think about viewability of the screen, volume of the voice prompts and how much prep work you might need to do to make your GPS system usable.
Finally, once you’ve decided on the system that makes the most sense for you, you’ll want to think carefully about the vendor. Be sure to compare both prices and consumer ratings for any online vendors you might be considering. You’ll also want to consider the security of any financial information you might be sharing as well as any trade-offs you might have to make, such as slower delivery times, in order to get a reduced price.
Discount Garmin GPS systems won’t cook dinner for you yet, but they’ll give you turn-by-turn directions for picking up take out. And who knows what’s next?
